Lars Nowak

       Lars Nowak is Full Professor for Media Studies at Foreign Studies College of Hunan Normal University. He is also a Lecturer (Privatdozent) for Media Studies at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany). He did his MA in Theater Studies, German Literature and Philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin and his PhD in Media Culture at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. He was a Junior Professor for Media Studies at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 2011–18 and a Visiting Professor for Film Studies at Freie Universität Berlin from 2019–20. He is the author of Deformation und Transdifferenz: Freak Show, frühes Kino, Tod Browning (2011), the editor of Medien – Krieg – Raum (2018), Bild und Negativität (2019) and Kriegsmedien im Spielfilm (2021, forthcoming) as well as co-editor of KartenWissen: Territoriale Räume zwischen Bild und Diagramm (2012), Filmische Moderne: 60 Fragmente (2019) and Parahumane Bilder (2021, forthcoming).

     His research interests are European and American film history, auteur and experimental film, cinematic genres, narrative film theory, photography, cartography, general image theory as well as connections between media history, military history and the history of the sciences. His research has been funded by Evangelisches Studienwerks Villigst (2002–05), Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftliches Forschungszentrum Trier at Universität Trier (2009–11), Geschwister Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung für Geisteswissenschaften (2011), Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (2011–15), Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (2018), Universitätsbund Erlangen-Nürnberg (2019), Ernst-Reuter-Gesellschaft (2020) and FONTE-Stiftung (2020–21). Nowak is currently writing a monograph on the use of photography and film to record experiments in ballistics and detonics. It traces the history of this genre of scientific photography and cinematography from the first photographs of conventional shots around 1860 to the photographic and cinematic documentation of the American nuclear bomb tests of 1945–62. Furthermore, he is pursuing a research project that examines the possibilities and peculiarities of pictorial negativity; the next step in this project will be a close examination of negative interpictoriality.
