White-Glazed Jiaodou, Yuezhou Kiln

Eastern Han to Three Kingdoms Period (ca. 25–280 CE)

This vessel stands 15.1 cm high and measures 26.3 cm across.

It was used for warming wine. Its form was based on bronze prototypes, with a phoenix-head spout at the front, a handle at the rear, and three feet supporting the base. Vessels of this type had been popular since the Warring States period (475–221 BC).The body is finely made and covered with a pale white glaze with a slight bluish tint, characteristic of ceramic production in Hunan during the Eastern Han period.

White-glazed wares formed a distinctive local tradition. These vessels often imitated bronze forms, with refined bodies and relatively full glaze coverage. Compared with the fully developed white porcelains of later periods, this type is regarded as being at an early stage of development and is often described by scholars as “proto-white porcelain” or early white ware.
