Celadon-Glazed Six-Lug Jar with Carved Lotus Petals, Yuezhou Kiln
Southern Dynasties (ca. 420–589 CE)
This jar stands 19.3 cm high, with a mouth diameter of 10.2 cm and a base diameter of 10.1 cm.
It has a straight rim, a short neck, and a rounded body that tapers inward toward the base. A raised band around the midsection divides the vessel into upper and lower sections. Six bridge-shaped lugs are attached at the shoulder. Lotus petal motifs are carved on the body, with overlapping petals on the upper section and upward-pointing petals below. The base is left unglazed, while the glazed surface is smooth and lustrous. The vessel was likely fired in a protective clay container. Lotus decoration became widespread in Yuezhou celadon after the Eastern Jin period, reflecting the growing influence of Buddhism.
