Celadon-Glazed Biyong Inkstone, Yuezhou Kiln

Southern Dynasties (ca. 420–589 CE)

This inkstone stands 7.5 cm high and measures 21.7 cm in diameter.

It has a circular form with a straight rim and a flat lip. A groove runs around the edge, and six horseshoe-shaped feet support the base. The raised centre was used for grinding ink, while the surrounding recessed area served as a reservoir. The form resembles the biyong, a circular institution of higher learning in the Zhou dynasty, from which the inkstone takes its name. The grinding surface is left unglazed, while the rest is covered with a transparent celadon glaze with fine crackle. The thick central section required support during firing, and dense rows of serrated spacers were used to prevent deformation and sticking.
