Jar with Brown-Green Painted Decoration on White Slip, Hengshan Kiln
Southern Song Dynasty (ca. 1127–1279 CE)
This jar stands 12 cm high, with a mouth diameter of 8.8 cm and a base diameter of 6.7 cm.
It has an outward-folding rim, a short neck, and a deep body. The upper section is covered with green glaze, while the lower section is coated in brown. On the white slip at the centre, scrolling floral motifs are painted in brown and green. The decoration was applied directly and fired without an additional transparent glaze. This technique, known as painted decoration on white slip, was a distinctive feature of Hunan kilns during the Song and Yuan periods, with Hengshan kiln as a major centre. The gradual transition of colours from green to white to brown creates a harmonious visual effect.
