Tea Bowl with Hare’s-Fur Streaks, Qiziqiao Kiln

Southern Song Dynasty (ca. 1127–1279 CE)

This bowl stands 4.8 cm high, with a mouth diameter of 10.8 cm and a base diameter of 3.4 cm.

It follows the standard form used in tea competitions during the Song dynasty. The rim curves inward to retain froth, and the centre is recessed to collect it. The lower exterior is left unglazed to allow heating. The vessel is coated with a dark glaze. Fine streaks resembling hare’s fur appear on the inner surface, produced by crystalline effects during firing and sometimes described as “silver hare’s fur.” Tea culture flourished during the Song period. Kilns in Hunan produced a wide variety of tea bowls, among which hare’s-fur and kiln-transformed wares are particularly notable.
